In an increasingly visually oriented society, we can help our students understand the Word of God by helping them become better listeners. When they are accountable for what they hear, they will listen more intently.
The following activities will encourage your students to listen closely:
- Have students listen to the Bible story then make up newspaper headlines that go with the story line.
- Have students re-tell the Bible story using only three sentences.
- Write questions about the Bible story on the chalkboard or a chart. Read the questions with the students before you tell the story. Ask students to listen to find out the answers.
- After students listen to the Bible story, ask them to draw what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Prepare papers by dividing them into thirds and labeling the sections “Beginning,” “Middle,” “End.”
- After telling the Bible story, summarize the story by retelling key points. While retelling, pause and omit words. Students supply the missing words.
