Guided Conversation is helping children think through questions and problems to determine Biblical answers. It is helping children think through the how and the why (on their level of ability) of the Bible passage being studied and consider how they can live the truth in obedience to God.
In order to have guided conversation, formulate thought questions rather than fact questions. Thought questions provide opportunity for the children to think, explore, and suggest as they work their way to answers based on God’s Word. Thought questions usually allow for more than one answer, and the answers reveal the children’s present levels of understanding. Answers to thought questions also reveal attitudes and needs.
This teaching method reveals not only lack of understanding, but warped and distorted ideas about God and His Word. A discussion time provides the opportunity to guide a child’s thinking so that he realizes he has not understood or is not thinking correctly.
