Food Caution

Posted January 26th, 2009 in 2s and 3s, Pre-Primary

We do not often think of food as a possible hazard at Sunday School, but certain foods may cause allergic reactions or present a choking problem. Even though twos and threes eat solid foods, many foods are still choking hazards for them. Any food that is hard, round, slippery, tough, or sticky can be a choking hazard. Always cut foods into small pieces and monitor children closely during snack time. The following list of foods may cause young children to choke.

  • Chunks or spoonfuls of peanut butter
  • Hard candies, mini-marshmallows, gummy candies, and gum
  • Ice cubes
  • Large chunks of any fruit, vegetable, meat, or cheese
  • Nuts, seeds, and peanuts
  • Popcorn
  • Unpeeled apple or pear slices, whole grapes, dried fruit, and cherries with pits
  • Whole or sliced hot dogs
