We do not often think of food as a possible hazard at Sunday School, but certain foods may cause allergic reactions or present a choking problem. Even though twos and threes eat solid foods, many foods are still choking hazards for them. Any food that is hard, round, slippery, tough, or sticky can be a choking hazard. Always cut foods into small pieces and monitor children closely during snack time. The following list of foods may cause young children to choke.
- Chunks or spoonfuls of peanut butter
- Hard candies, mini-marshmallows, gummy candies, and gum
- Ice cubes
- Large chunks of any fruit, vegetable, meat, or cheese
- Nuts, seeds, and peanuts
- Popcorn
- Unpeeled apple or pear slices, whole grapes, dried fruit, and cherries with pits
- Whole or sliced hot dogs
