Pre-Primary Age Characteristics

Each Pre-Primary child is unique in his or her maturity and development, but Pre-Primaries share some common age characteristics.

A Pre-Primary child . . .

  • Asks why and how
  • Likes rhyming poems
  • Finds it hard to differentiate between fact and fiction
  • Likes routines
  • Likes to hear the same stories again and again
  • Likes to hop and twirl around
  • Can build a straight tower of blocks
  • Can cut on lines
  • Can add lines to a body, such as legs and arms, when drawing
  • Can mold shapes with Play-Doh
  • Can put puzzles together
  • Enjoys playing with other children
  • Likes to remind adults that he is not a baby
  • Follows directions and likes to help
  • Learns more appropriate ways to display his feelings
  • Seeks praise and affection
